HISTORY

BULAKAN is one of the oldest towns in the Philippine and the first capital of the Province of Bulacan before it was moved to Malolos shortly after the American occupation.  It is about 35 kilometers from the City of Manila.  It is one of the 24 towns of the Province of Bulacan.

Our Story

BULAKAN is bounded on the south by the town of Obando, on the west by Manila Bay, on the north by the City of Malolos, and the northeast by the town of Guiguinto.  It has ranked tenth in size in the entire province.  The following are the barrios that comprise this town.

The name BULAKAN was derived from the Tagalog word “BULAK” which means cotton in English.  When the Spaniards first came to our shores to colonize us, they found cotton, among others, growing abundantly in many places in Luzon, particularly in Bulakan.

Most of the towns in the provinces of Bulacan were founded by the Augustinians. It was known that the first minister and founder of Bulacan was Father Agustin del Alberqueque, OSA.

​

In the year 1591, the town of Bulakan had 1,200 tributers or 4,800 persons, one Augustinian convent, and one Alcalde Mayor who had jurisdiction over the town of Malolos (become independent in 1673) Caluya now Balagtas and formerly “BIGAA” (become a separate town in 1596), Guiguinto (become a separate town in 1641) and Meycauayan.

The history of the town of Bulakan cannot be completed without enumerating its following sons who served as town Mayor, some of whom had added luster to the town’s glorious history;

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTIC

 

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS

The Municipality of Bulakan is surrounded by several proximate municipalities.  It is bounded on the north by the Municipality of Malolos, on the south by the Municipality of Obando, on the west by the Manila Bay, and on the northeast by Guiguinto.  It is about thirty-five (35) kilometers away from the City of Manila.  It has an approximate area of 72.90 square kilometers or 2.7284% of the total land area of the entire province of Bulacan which is 2,672.03 square kilometers.  It ranks tenth (10th) in terms of land among the different municipalities in the province of Bulacan.

CLIMATE

​

BULAKAN, just like the rest of the other towns in the province of Bulacan, has two (2) pronounced seasons, the wet season and the dry season.  The former commences in the month of May and ends in November, while the latter sets in during the rest of the year.  In general, the town of Bulakan receives an average rainfall of 189.76 mm.

The annual temperature in the Municipality is 27.5ͦ c in December.  The coldest month is January wherein the temperature reaches 25ͦ c.

TOPOGRAPHY

 

The town’s terrain is generally flat having a coastline with portions touching Manila Bay.  It is intersected by several tributaries of Manila Bay which serve as outlets of the rain water.  These outlets are often heavily silted causing floods in the Municipality.

 

SOIL TYPES

​

Bulakan soils vary from hydro soil in the swamp areas, clay loam in the central lowlands, and quiqua silt loam in the northwestern part of the municipality.

POPULATION SIZE AND GROWTH

 

The Municipal Nutrition and Population Officer (MNPO) preliminary report in 2022 shows that the Municipality of Bulakan has a total population of 90,153, and barangay Bambang is the most densely populated with a population of 15,759. It is followed by Barangay Matungao and Barangay Sta. Ana with a population of 14,893 and 8,867 respectively, on the other hand, the least populated Barangay in the same year are Perez and Sta. Ines with a population of 2,776 and 2,614 respectively.

Comparing the population of the Municipality in 2010 which is 78,561, it shows an increase of 11,592 persons from 2010-2022, with an annual growth rate of 966 or an average increase of 12.86% in the span of twelve (12) years.

The highest percentage changes in population from 2020-2022 is exhibited by Barangay San Francisco with 10.37%, Barangay Perez with 5.15%, Barangay Matungao with 4.44%, Barangay Tibig with 2.62%, Barangay Pitpitan with 2.52%, and Barangay San Jose with 2.07%.

On the other hand, the barangays show the least percentage change in 478 populations are Barangay Maysantol with 1.94%, Barangay Sta. Ana with 1.86%, Barangay Bambang with 1.14%, Barangay Sta. Ines with 0.92%, and San Nicolas with 0.66%.

Likewise, there is a significant decrease in the population at Barangay Balubad, Barangay Bagumbayan, and Barangay Taliptip the population decreased by 365 persons in the year 2022 and it is evident that this is due to migration.

 

URBAN AND RURAL

 

The Municipality of Bulakan is still predominantly rural, however, Barangay San Jose, Bagumbayan, Matungao, and Bambang are classified by Sangguniang Bayan and NSO as urban Barangay with the following populations of 3,060, 3,135, 14,749, and 12,097 respectively. It is about 57.94% of its population in 2010 accounts for the rural population while nearly 42.06% goes to its urban population.

POPULATION AND DENSITY

 

The population density of the Municipality in 2020 registered at 12 persons per hectare and this would escalate to 14 persons per hectare by the year 2030.

NUMBER OF HOUSEHOLD

 

The Municipal Nutrition and Population Officer (MNPO) report in 2022 showed a total of 24,477 households surveyed. In comparison with the total number of households of 22,348 in 2021, an increase of 2,129 households from 2021-2022.

SEX AND AGE STRUCTURE

 

Like the rest of the country, the population of Bulakan exhibits a pyramidal age structure.  The population between the ages 0-14 accounts for 20,280 or 22.50% of the total population.  On the other hand, 62,885 or 69.75% belong to the 15-64 years old age bracket and only 6,988 or 7.75% are in the age bracket of 65 years old and above.

Regarding sex distribution, the female population slightly outnumbered the male population by 0.33% in 2022.  There was a 43,883 male population as against the 44,163 female population which results in a sex ratio of 1 male in 1.006 female comparatively.

RELIGION

​

Roman Catholicism has remained the predominant religion of the population since its propagation in the country.  Out of 90,153 populations in 2022, 79,064 or 87.7% are Roman Catholics.  Other Christian faiths in the municipality are Iglesia ni Cristo, United Methodist Church, and United Church of Christ in the Philippines.

DIALECT

​

Generally, the Municipality of Bulakan is typically a Tagalog-speaking town. It is a predominantly Tagalog-speaking province about 84.4% of the population in 2022 speak Tagalog, while the rest speak other dialects such as Waray, Bicol, Ilocano, and Cebuano.

​

LITERACY RATE

           

The increase in the literacy rate/level in the Municipality in 2022 is quite significant as compared to the previous years.  Out of the 90,153, 89,269, or 99.02% are literate and only 884 persons or 0.98 are illiterate
