Araw ng Kagitingan

Municipality of Bulakan
April 9th

Captain Slay departed Manila for Bulacan on January 18, 1763, leading a group of 2,000 Chinese allies, 300 Malabar Negroes, and 400 British soldiers. Despite the valiant efforts of Alcalde Mayor and Fr. The Recollect Curate of Bulakan, Agustin de San Antonio, they were unable to prevent the British invasion. Serving heroically in the defense of the town, San Antonio ultimately sacrificed his life. His death led to a unification of the Spaniards and residents of Bulakan. The conflict began with the burning of the Catholic Church in Bulakan and ended with the defeat of the British forces by a powerful army of 8,000 Spaniards and Filipinos led by Jose Pedro Bustos in June 1763. The British suffered significant losses and were forced to retreat to Manila. The bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers from Bulakan were commemorated in history.

Palimusan

Barangay Sta. Ana
September 7th/8th

The Palimusan festival is an old tradition in the barangay of Sta. Ana, Bulakan during the eve of The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This commemoration is said to be one-of-a-kind as it is only celebrated in Bulakan. Palimusan is comparable to the old tradition called caroling whereas it is an anthem for the Nativity of Jesus. Palimusan on the other hand is a hymn dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and has been celebrated for centuries and decades by the citizens of Sta Ana, Bulakan.

As told by the book, a bequest by the late historian, and a resident writer in Bulakan, Mr. Naning T. Santos, the said tradition was based on an old folktale. “Before, there was a beautiful young maiden that knocked on houses and begged for cloth that she could use for her infant, the affair happened every 7th of September, during the eve of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.” It has been stated that the woman knocking on doors was Sta. Ana, the barangay’s patron, reminds them of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Aside from that, based on the history of Barangay Sta. Ana, published by Mr. Gregorio Santos et al. in the 1950s, states that Palimusan is the barrio’s principal event. During the early days of this festival, Sta. Ana was once referred to as “Dapdap”; by the Spaniards. However, considering Palimusan’s tradition and Sta Ana’s role as the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and patron saint of the barangay, the barrio changed its name and was named after her.

Palimusan is a tradition that is treasured by our municipality and its townsmen. It is devoted as an appreciation to the blessings the Almighty has given. He gave us unconditional love when He prepared the Virgin Mary for the Birth of Christ.

Apatnapung Araw na Pagkamatay ni Kristo
(Semana Santa)
Pag-Akyat

Barangay Pitpitan

Ines

Barangay Sta. Ines
January 21st

The origin of the revered image of Santa Ines begins in 1720 which is according to the people of the town, a fisherman from Pariahan (then the name of the town) was in the middle of the stormy sea when he saw a strange mysterious light at the far end of his boat.

When he came nearer to see it, the fisherman was surprised to see an image on a floating basin. He tied the basin to his boat and towed it for home. Upon sighting land, the fisherman attempted to lift the basin with the image and bring it ashore, yet strangely, he could not even lift it. Other fishermen came to help him, but the basin would not budge. But when the women came to their succor, they handily and easily lifted the image safely to the shore.

With this mysterious event, the townsfolk considered the event a miracle that they immediately constructed a chapel and put it under the patronage of Sta. Ines—a name that was on the book held by her left hand. Eventually, the saint’s name replaced “Pariahan” as the name of the barrio.

St. Agnes is widely known as the patron saint of young girls. She is also the patron saint of chastity, rape survivors and the Children of Mary. She is often represented with a lamb, the symbol of her virgin innocence, and a palm branch, like other martyrs. She is shown as a young girl in robes holding a palm branch with the lamb either at her feet or in her arms

Pista ni San Juan Bautista

Barangay Balubad
June 24th

Trailing back to the hearsays of the elderly people of the barangay, passed to the newer generations to the often-ingrained fabrics of history and society. The patron of the barangay is originally San Juan Evanghelista. Dating back to the 80’s a philanthropist named Chen-Chen Tansinsin officiated and led the barangay. The visita back then was still made out of wood and woven bamboo skin. As time went by, funds and donations overflowed the chapel so the renovation of the visita was commenced including the addition of the bell tower. The bell was made out of pure brass which resulted in its crisp and resonant sound. The bell was donated by the Familia Pineda of Pampanga as indicated by the message carved on the bell, and the message stated was “Ang kampanaryong ito ay handog ng Familia Pineda ng Pampanga para sa Barrio Balubad at kay San Juan Bautista na patron nito.”. From then on, the visita is honored to the two saints; San Juan Evanghelista, which is celebrated on the 27th of December and serves as their barrio’s fiesta. And San Juan Bautista, on the 24th of June as their patronal feast.

Pista ng Sto. Cristo

Barangay Maysantol
September 14th

Rosario

Barangay Taliptip
October 7th

Barangay Taliptip is the center of piscary in the town of Bulakan. As of the elderlies and their hearsays, the name Taliptip is from the word “Taliktik” which is a kind of mollusk (snail) that is small and pointy in figure and usually adheres itself onto river fences. According to the geography, the word “Taliktik” means “Dulong Bahagi”. Taliptip resides at the edge of the municipality of Bulakan. It connects through different municipalities and cities such as Obando, City of Meycauayan, City of Malolos, City of Malabon, and City of Manila. Later on, due to the different languages used by the colonizers, the formerly Taliktik has incrementally modified to the now known, Taliptip. One of the most renowned barrio fiestas celebrated in Bulakan is the Pistang Nayon ng Taliptip. It is celebrated annually every 7 th of October (formerly every 3 rd week of October) concurrent to the feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary or known locally as Mahal na Birhen ng Sto. Rosario as their patron saint. One of the primary and most anticipated events of the barangay is their colorful Pagoda Festival. The festival was made more lively and vivid by various competitions such as “Bangkarera” or boat racing, “Bangkagandahan” which is a design contest of boats, and the intense “Indakan sa Kalye”. Pagoda Festival started long ago on the 15 th of October 2000, the primary objective of this festivity is to bring prosperity and abundance to the waters of Taliptip that serves as their substantial form of livelihood. Taliptip is surrounded by the abundant bodies of water and is overlooking the perimeter of Manila Bay. One of the notable sitios that resides Taliptip are Sitio Pariahan, Torres, Wawang Dapdap, Wawang Capis, Pinagkahipunan, Daang Kambing, Sitio Capol, Sitio Kinse, Sitio Bunutan, and Sitio Tapatan which currently has no inhabitants as the land is already occupied by the installation of the New Manila International Airport. The said sitios were rich in history because of the locale having a solid community, parishes, and schools. The memories of the vanished sitios are still flourishing in the ancient bells and religious figures of patron saints left.
